About Madhyamaheshwar
At Madhyamaheshwar, Lord Shiva is worshipped in belly form — his stomach and navel — as part of the Panch Kedar manifestation. The temple sits at 3,389 metres on a slope surrounded by the peaks of Chaukhamba, Kedarnath and Neelkanth. The stretch passes through the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary — one of the world's richest biosphere reserves — making this pilgrimage uniquely intertwined with nature.
The Trek Through Wild Nature
The trek from Mansuna to Madhyamaheshwar passes through remote hill villages, the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary with its rare species, and dense oak forests with wild flowers of every hue. The route includes Jugasu, Ransi (1,400m — halfway point), Khatara, Nanu (2,100m) and Makhouma. Pilgrims may encounter Himalayan black bears, mountain snakes, jungle fowls and pythons. Despite the challenges, the journey through snow-white peaks and lush greenery makes this one of the most rewarding treks in Uttarakhand.
The Divine Feminine Presence
Madhyamaheshwar is unique among the Panch Kedar for the nearby presence of the divine feminine. Goddess Kali is worshipped at Kalimath, Goddess Lakshmi at Mahalakshmi Temple, and Goddess Saraswati at Mahasaraswati Temple. The ancient river Saraswati flows as a small stream down from the temple. The Budha Madhyamaheshwar Lake atop a nearby mountain reflects the dazzling snow-capped Chaukhamba peak.
