Deity: Goddess Ganga

Gangotri Dham
by Helicopter 2026

The Source of the Sacred Ganga - Second Dham of the Circuit

📍 3,048m (10,000 ft) 🚁 Helipad: Harsil 🌸 Opens: Akshaya Tritiya (late April / early May) 🍂 Closes: Diwali

About Gangotri Dham

The Gangotri sector is a 30-35 minute helicopter flight from Sahastradhara (Dehradun) to the Harsil helipad. From Harsil it is a 25 km road transfer (45-60 minutes) to Gangotri town, then a 500m walk down to the temple ghat on the Bhagirathi river. The road segment is operated by our ground partners with experienced hill drivers; the road quality is good through Bhairon Ghati and the final descent into Gangotri is part of the visual experience. Saffron Chariot pre-coordinates VIP darshan slots so the queue cuts from 1-2 hours in peak season to 15-30 minutes. For the Bhagirath myth, the Shivling peak panorama, the submerged-Shivling rock formation and the Gorkha-era temple history, see our Gangotri Temple destination guide.

Spiritual Highlight

The day at Gangotri fits the optional ritual ghat bath in the Bhagirathi (the river is glacier-cold, even in May - 4-6°C is typical) before darshan, and a few minutes at the Pandava Gufa across the river. Pilgrims who want a full Rudrabhishek puja at the temple should request advance coordination at booking; the priest committee schedules sponsored pujas around the regular darshan flow.

Nearby Attractions

  • Bhagirathi river ghat - 100m below temple, sacred bath option (water 4-6°C, even in May)
  • Pandava Gufa - 1.5km, 20 min stop possible if booked early
  • Submerged Shivling - visible only in winter when river drops, not seen in helicopter season
