Yamunotri Dham

The Source of Goddess Yamuna - First Dham of the Circuit
About Yamunotri Dham
The Yamunotri sector is a 25-30 minute helicopter flight from Sahastradhara (Dehradun) to the Kharsali helipad (the village across the river from Janki Chatti). From Kharsali our ground partners transfer you the 3 km to Janki Chatti, then the final 6 km to the temple is on foot, by pony, or by palki - the trail is paved but climbs roughly 700 metres of elevation. Saffron Chariot includes the palki service for Premium tier pilgrims and as a paid add-on for Standard; senior pilgrims and anyone with knee, heart or breathing concerns are strongly advised to take it. The Yamunotri leg is the only Char Dham helicopter sector that does NOT land within walking distance of the temple. For the Yamuna-Yama mythology, the Surya Kund prasad-cooking ritual, and the temple's 19th-century Tehri rebuild, see our Yamunotri Temple destination guide.
Spiritual Highlight
The day at Yamunotri is paced for the climb: helicopter departs Dehradun before 8 AM, you reach the temple by mid-morning, complete the Surya Kund prasad ritual and darshan, and descend in the early afternoon for the return flight. Pilgrims who request a Yamunotri-specific puja sponsorship (rare) should flag it at booking; the priest committee schedules sponsored pujas around the regular flow.
