Yamunotri
Land of Snowy Granite, Hot Springs and Divine Offerings

📍 3,235m (10,614 ft) 🙏 Goddess Yamuna 🗓️ May to November

About Yamunotri

Yamunotri is the source of the sacred Yamuna river and the first dham in the traditional Char Dham circuit. The origin of Yamuna lies in frozen state at the western edge of the Bandarpunch Mountain peak (6,315m), flowing from a glacial lake called Saptarishi Kund on Kalindi Parbat at 4,421 metres. According to mythology, Yamuna was the sister of Yama (God of Death) - bathing here is believed to spare one from Yama's punishments.

Surya Kund and the Temple

Among the several thermal springs in the glacial region, Surya Kund is the most important - steaming at 100°F despite the snowy surroundings. The worship of Goddess Yamuna requires offerings of rice and potatoes boiled in the hot spring water, tied loosely in cloth. Devotees first worship the Divya Shila (sacred rock pillar) before proceeding to worship Goddess Yamuna. The Yamuna Bai Kund, a pleasantly warm spring nearby, is where devotees take ritualistic baths before worship.

Temple History

The Yamunotri Temple was first constructed by King of Tehri, Maharaja Pratap Shah, in 1863 from black granite stone. The current temple was rebuilt by the Jaipur Maharani Guleria in the 19th century after earthquake damage. The temple was destroyed in the 1923 Himalayan earthquake, then again damaged in 1982, and rebuilt both times. The hereditary Panda priests from Kharsala village near Janki Bai Chatti guide devotees through the worship rituals.

The Surya Kund Prasad-Cooking Ritual

The defining spiritual act at Yamunotri is found nowhere else in the Char Dham circuit. The Surya Kund hot spring at the temple boils continuously at 88°C - hot enough to cook food in minutes. Pilgrims arrive with raw rice and uncooked potatoes wrapped loosely in a thin cotton cloth (provided by the temple priests for a small fee), tie the bundle to a long stick or cord, and lower it into the spring. In 4-6 minutes the rice and potatoes emerge cooked, infused with the sacred mineral water of the kund. This thermal-cooked prasad is then offered to Goddess Yamuna at the sanctum and returned to the worshipper to take home. The Yamuna Bai Kund nearby provides a warmer, gentler pool where pilgrims take the ritual bath before approaching the inner sanctum. The Divya Shila, a sacred rock pillar at the temple courtyard, is worshipped before the main idol darshan.

Worship Schedule, Festivals and Photography Rules

Daily worship at Yamunotri is led by the Pandas of Kharsala village (the original deity-guardian community across the river). The day begins with the Mangal Aarti at 6:30 AM, followed by darshan, the prasad-cooking ritual at Surya Kund, and the noon Bhog. Evening Aarti at 7:00 PM closes the day. Major festivals are Akshaya Tritiya (the kapat opening, late April or early May - the deity is brought back from Kharsala in a chariot procession), Yamuna Jayanti in March-April (celebrated at the winter Kharsala temple), and Yama Dwitiya (the day after Bhai Dooj, when the kapat closes and the deity returns to Kharsala for the six-month winter). Yama Dwitiya is unique to Yamunotri among the Char Dham; the closing ceremony is a major draw for photographers in late October. Mobile phones and cameras are banned inside the inner sanctum from the 2026 season; the Surya Kund and Yamuna Bai Kund areas remain open for photography. Sponsored darshan rates are modest at Yamunotri compared to the other three dhams; specific Mahabhishek puja arrangements should be requested at booking time.
