About Panch Badri
The Panch Badri are five sacred temples of Lord Vishnu spread across the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. After Lord Vishnu took over Badrinath from Lord Shiva, the divine legacy continued in five forms. Vishal Badri (Badrinath) is the primary temple, while Adi Badri, Yogadhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri and Vridh Badri represent different aspects of Vishnu's presence in these sacred Himalayan heights.
The Five Badri Temples
Vishal Badri is the main Badrinath temple — the primary Char Dham shrine. Adi Badri, at 3,200 ft near Karnaprayag, is a cluster of 16 small ancient temples with Gupta-period architecture and a one-metre black stone idol. Yogadhyan Badri at 1,920m near Pandukeshwar shows Vishnu in meditation. Bhavishya Badri at 2,744m near Tapovan, surrounded by dense forests, is prophesied to become the future Badrinath when the main shrine becomes inaccessible. Vridh Badri, 7 km below Joshimath on the main highway, is where Vishnu resided before Adi Shankaracharya established the main temple — and is the only one open year-round.
Bhavishya Badri — The Future Badrinath
Bhavishya Badri holds special significance as the temple that will replace the main Badrinath when the original shrine becomes inaccessible due to natural changes. This was prophesied in ancient scriptures. The temple houses an idol of the lion-headed Narasimha. The Dhulia Ganga river flows in musical cascades nearby. The trek is strenuous and passes through forest tracks, but the serene ambience makes it worthwhile. Geologists have noted that Joshimath — the entry point to Badrinath — sits on an ancient landslide that is slowly sinking.
