About Tungnath
Tungnath is the highest of all Himalayan pilgrimage sites and the highest Shiva temple in the world. Here Lord Shiva's arms fell after the Pandava Bhim pulled the metamorphosed bull. The temple stands at 3,680 metres amid cascading temperate Alpine forests, tiny wildflowers and grassy bugyals, maintaining its unsurpassed sanctity due to the difficulty of access.
The Easiest Panch Kedar Trek
Unlike the other Panch Kedar temples, Tungnath is reached via a relatively easy 3 km trek from Chopta — often completed in 3–4 hours. The temple is visible soon after the first few hundred metres, providing a constant source of energy for pilgrims. The journey passes through some of the finest scenery in the Himalayas: smiling rhododendrons in summer, countless species of wildflowers and plants, and panoramic views of Panchchuli, Nanda Devi, Neelkanth and Bandarpunch peaks.
Inside the Temple
The stone-built temple signifies Lord Shiva's strength. The Shivalinga is also made of stone — unlike other Kedar temples where silver plates are used. Beside the Shivalinga stand statues of Maharshi Vyasa and Kaal Bhairav. The entrance is low and small, with Nandi standing guard at the front. Two smaller temples nearby are dedicated to Parvati and Kaal Bhairav. Chopta, the base camp, is locally known as the "Cherrapunji of Uttarakhand" for its constant heavy rainfall — one reason for the lush vegetation.
