About Uttarkashi
Uttarkashi mirrors the sacred geography of Varanasi — both cities sit at the confluence of three rivers: Bhagirathi (Ganga), Varuna and Asi (Kalgad). Mythology foretold that Varanasi might be defiled during Kali Yuga, and Uttarkashi with its similar geographical alignment would serve as its replacement. A massive Trident near the Vishwanath Temple and temples to Ekadash Rudra, Bhairav and Gyaneshwar reinforce this sacred parallel.
Gateway to Gangotri and Yamunotri
Uttarkashi serves as the key transit point for pilgrims heading to Gangotri (the second Char Dham) and Yamunotri (the first). The town sits on the banks of the Bhagirathi and is well-connected to Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh. Despite its Himalayan location, Uttarkashi has developed modern infrastructure — hotels, banking, communication — making it an ideal overnight halt for pilgrims beginning the upper reaches of their yatra.
Culture and Craftsmanship
The people of Uttarkashi live in traditional homes of mud, stone and wood — the upper portion for humans, the lower for domesticated animals. This ancient Bharatvarsha-style living gives the town a timeless character. The dominant cottage industry is wool and woollen garment production, manufactured sustainably without environmental impact. Sheep are raised at heights of 1,525 to 2,440 metres. Goddess Kuteti Devi has a temple atop a hill about 1.5 km from the Vishwanath Temple.
