The Source of the Sacred Ganga — Second Dham of the Circuit

📍 3,048m (10,000 ft) 🚁 Helipad: Harsil 🌸 Opens: Akshaya Tritiya (late April / early May) 🍂 Closes: Diwali

About Gangotri Dham

Gangotri is the spiritual source of the sacred Ganga river. According to Hindu mythology, this is where Goddess Ganga descended to earth at King Bhagirath's request. The Gangotri Glacier (19km away) is the actual geographical source of the Bhagirathi river, which joins the Alaknanda to form the Ganga at Devprayag. The temple, built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, stands on the banks of the Bhagirathi.

Spiritual Highlight

Taking a dip in the icy Bhagirathi river at Gangotri — directly below the temple — is considered to cleanse all sins accumulated in a lifetime. Even for those who only touch the sacred water, the experience is deeply moving.
