About Nainital
Nainital is the most-visited hill station in the Kumaon division of Uttarakhand, built around the eponymous Naini Lake at ~2,084 m. The town is a 51 Shaktipeeth pilgrimage site - the Naina Devi temple at the lake's northern end marks the spot where Goddess Sati's eyes are believed to have fallen. Founded by P. Barron in 1841 as a British summer retreat, Nainital today combines a lively town centre on the Mall Road, a forested ridge of viewpoints (Snow View, Tiffin Top, Naina Peak), and the Naini Lake itself which is the visual and ritual centre. Most Kumaon sightseeing tours base here for 2 nights.
Naini Lake and Naina Devi Temple
Naini Lake is a kidney-shaped, mountain-fed lake at the heart of Nainital, ringed by forested ridges. Yacht rides, paddleboats, and rowboats are available at the Mallital ghat. The Naina Devi temple at the northern end is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths and the spiritual centre of Kumaon. Aarti is performed twice daily; the temple hosts the Nanda Devi Mela in September. The walk around the lake (~3 km) takes about an hour and offers different angles of the surrounding peaks.
Mall Road, Tiffin Top, and Snow View
Mall Road runs along the lake's eastern shore - a pedestrian-priority promenade with cafes, woollen shops, the Tibetan market, and the Capitol Hill area. Tiffin Top (2,290 m) is a 4 km hike or pony ride from Mallital with panoramic views. Snow View Point (2,270 m) is reached by aerial ropeway from Mallital - the best viewpoint for the Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Nanda Kot peaks on a clear day. Naina Peak (2,615 m) is the highest point in town, a 6 km hike or pony ride.
Beyond the Town
Nainital makes a good base for the broader Kumaon lake circuit: Bhimtal (22 km, larger lake), Naukuchiatal (26 km, nine-cornered lake), Sattal (24 km, group of seven lakes). The Pangot bird-watching area is 15 km up and a major draw for ornithologists. The Hanuman Garhi temple on the way out of town is a popular sunset stop.

Char Dham Helicopter Connection
Nainital is in the Kumaon region, separate from the Garhwal Char Dham circuit, but it is part of our broader Uttarakhand sightseeing offering. We pair it with Jim Corbett National Park in the 4N/5D ex-Delhi Kumaon-only tour and with Mussoorie + Rishikesh in the longer Garhwal+Kumaon arcs (6N/7D and 7N/8D). Pilgrims who finish a Char Dham helicopter yatra and have time often add a Nainital extension as the relaxation leg.
