Yamunotri Yatra Packages

Yamunotri at 3,293 m is the first Dham of the Char Dham circuit and the symbolic source of the Yamuna river. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and the Surya Kund hot spring next to it lets devotees cook rice in a cloth bag as prasad. Reached either by helicopter (Kharsali helipad) or by 6 km trek from Janki Chatti.

TL;DR · Yamunotri Yatra is bundled into our Char Dham helicopter and Char Dham road packages. Helicopter format flies to Kharsali helipad; road format requires a 6 km trek (each way) from Janki Chatti, available on foot, by pony, or by palanquin. Pilgrims who cannot trek and cannot get the helicopter slot should consider Do Dham (Kedarnath + Badrinath) instead - we don't offer Do Dham with Yamunotri.
About Yamunotri: The first Dham of the Char Dham circuit, Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna - sister of Yama (the god of death) and one of the seven sacred rivers. The 19th-century temple was built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur. The Surya Kund and Divya Shila are the two key ritual stops within the temple complex. Frequently asked questions

Why is there no standalone Yamunotri Yatra package?

Like Gangotri, standalone Yamunotri demand is too low to operate. The Janki Chatti trek (6 km each way) gates the dham and most pilgrims who want Yamunotri are doing the full Char Dham circuit. Custom standalone Yamunotri quotes are available on request.

How do I reach Yamunotri on a Char Dham yatra?

Helicopter: morning sortie from Sahastradhara to Kharsali helipad - the helipad is right at the Yamunotri Dham. Road: drive Haridwar -> Barkot (overnight) -> Janki Chatti (the road head). From Janki Chatti, the temple is 6 km up and 6 km back. Options: walk, hire a pony, or take a palanquin (porter chair).

How long is the Yamunotri trek?

6 km each way from Janki Chatti, gaining ~600 m in altitude. Walking takes 3-4 hours up, 2-3 hours down for fit pilgrims. Pony hire is ~₹1,200-₹1,800 each way; palanquin (4 porters) is ~₹4,000-₹6,000 each way. Senior pilgrims and anyone with knee or heart issues should use a pony or palanquin.

Is Yamunotri reachable by helicopter year-round?

No - the temple itself is closed mid-November to late April, and helicopter operations only run during the open season. Even during the open season, helicopters can be grounded by clouds or rain (Yamunotri is in a deep valley with frequent low cloud).

What is Surya Kund?

Surya Kund is a natural hot spring in the Yamunotri temple complex with water hot enough to cook rice. The traditional pilgrim ritual is to lower a cloth bag of rice into the kund for a few minutes; it cooks and is taken home as prasad. The Divya Shila next to it is worshipped before entering the main temple.
