About Kalpeshwar
Kalpeshwar is where Lord Shiva's matted locks fell when Bhim caught the metamorphosed bull. The name "Kalpeshwar" means "the one who has conquered the barriers of Time (Kalpa)" - across all four mythological eras: Satya, Treta, Dwapar and Kali Yuga. Also called Jateshwar, it is a cave temple approached through steep treks amid waterfalls and desolate plateaus. Notably, Kalpeshwar is the only Panch Kedar temple that remains open throughout the year.
The Cave Temple
Kalpeshwar is a cave temple at approximately 8,000 feet, reached through the heights of Chamoli district. The approach involves a 9 km trek from Helang through steep terrain, waterfalls and mystic desolate plateaus. Despite the altitude, the temple remains accessible year-round - unlike the other four Panch Kedar temples that close during winter. The cave setting adds to the mystical atmosphere of this ancient shrine.
