About Kanatal
Kanatal is a small, quiet hill town at ~2,590 m in the Tehri Garhwal region, 78 km from Mussoorie on the road to Chamba and the Bhagirathi valley. Once a glacial lake whose floor was reclaimed for an apple orchard (Kana = blind, Tal = lake), today it is a forested ridge with a few resorts, apple farms, oak groves, and the nearby Surkanda Devi shaktipeeth temple at 2,757 m. Kanatal is increasingly added to Garhwal sightseeing circuits as a quieter alternative to Mussoorie - similar altitude, far fewer crowds, and a clearer view of the high Himalayas.
Surkanda Devi - the Hill-Top Shaktipeeth
Surkanda Devi temple sits at 2,757 m on a ridge ~2 km uphill from Kaddukhal village (which is 6 km from Kanatal). The walk up takes 30-40 minutes through pine forest. It is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths - believed to be the spot where the head of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu cut her body during the Daksha Yagna. Panoramic views from the summit cover the Bhagirathi range and the Yamuna valley. The trek is gentle and senior-friendly.
Apple Orchards and Forest Walks
Kanatal sits in apple-growing country - the Tehri Garhwal apple harvest runs August-October and many resorts arrange orchard visits. Forest walks through dense oak and rhododendron groves are the main outdoor activity. The Eco Park at Kodia Forest is a short drive away, and the Tehri Lake is 35 km north for a half-day excursion (boat rides, parasailing). For trekkers, Kanatal is a quieter base for the Nag Tibba trek (2 days, summit at 3,022 m).
Why Stop at Kanatal
Pilgrims and travellers often choose Kanatal over Mussoorie for two reasons: (1) it is significantly quieter - no Mall Road crowds, no traffic - and (2) the views toward the high Himalayas are clearer because the air pollution from the Doon Valley does not reach this far. Kanatal works well as a 1-2 night stop on a longer Garhwal sightseeing arc, paired with Mussoorie one direction or with Chamba and Tehri Lake on the other.

Char Dham Helicopter Connection
Kanatal is included in our 11N/12D Garhwal Grand Tour as the quieter Mussoorie alternative on Day 4-5 of the itinerary, between the Mussoorie nights and the Chopta sector. Pilgrims who want extra acclimatisation before flying Char Dham by helicopter occasionally use Kanatal as a 1-night pre-yatra stop.
