TL;DR · This is the longest Uttarakhand sightseeing arc in the catalogue - not a Char Dham helicopter pilgrimage. You spend 1 night at Haridwar, 2 nights at Mussoorie, 2 nights at Kanatal, 2 nights at Chopta (with the Tungnath / Chandrashila or Deoria Tal trek), 1 night at Joshimath, 2 nights at Auli and 1 night at Rudraprayag. Best season: March to June and September to November; for snow at Auli and Chopta, December to February. For shorter Auli-focused circuits, see our Mussoorie + Joshimath + Auli + Rudraprayag + Rishikesh 8N/9D or Auli + Rudraprayag 5N/6D. For pilgrims, see the Char Dham 5N/6D by Helicopter.

What you see on this tour

Haridwar - the Ganga Aarti town

Haridwar sits where the Ganga leaves the Himalayas for the plains, one of Hinduism's seven holiest cities. The headline experience is the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri (own arrangement, free) - hundreds of oil lamps floated downstream as the priests perform aarti.

Mussoorie - the Queen of the Hills

Mussoorie sits in the Garhwal foothills above Dehradun. Two nights here cover Kempty Falls, Company Garden, Library Chowk, Bhatta Falls, Camel Back Road and the Mall Road - plus the Gun Hill ropeway (own cost) for a panoramic Doon Valley view.

Kanatal - apple-orchard hill resort

Kanatal is a quieter alternative to Mussoorie - apple orchards, deodar forest and a free leisure day. Optional own-arrangement add-ons include the Surkanda Devi temple climb (one of the Siddha Peethas) and short forest walks. The Eco Park is a roadside stop on the drive in.

Chopta - the Tungnath / Chandrashila trek base

Chopta is the trek base for Tungnath Mandir, one of the Panch Kedars and the highest Shiva temple in the world (3 km gentle climb from the road head). Strong walkers continue 1 km further to Chandrashila summit for a 360-degree Himalayan view. The gentler alternative is the Deoria Tal trek - a high-altitude lake mirroring the Chaukhamba peaks. The region is rich in rhododendron and deodar forest.

Joshimath - the Adi Shankaracharya matha

Joshimath, in Chamoli district at around 1,890 m, is the seat of one of Adi Shankaracharya's four mathas (Jyotirmath) and the winter abode of Lord Badri. It is the road-head gateway to Badrinath and the rope-way / road link to Auli.

Auli - alpine meadows and the Gurso Bugyal trek

Auli sits at 2,519 - 3,050 m and is one of India's premier skiing destinations, often compared with the best ski resorts in the world. The Joshimath - Auli chair lift / cable car (own cost) gives sweeping views of Nanda Devi, and a short trek to Gurso Bugyal opens panoramic views of Trishul Peak and Dron Parvat.

Rudraprayag - Panch Prayag

Rudraprayag is one of the Panch Prayag (the five sacred confluences of the Alaknanda). Here the Mandakini meets the Alaknanda - one of the holiest stops on the Char Dham road yatra, and a peaceful river-bank night to close out the trip.

Compare options

This is the longest Uttarakhand sightseeing arc we run. If twelve days is too much, the 8N/9D and 5N/6D variants below cover a similar Garhwal / Auli region with fewer overnight stops. The shorter 8N/9D Chopta-route alternative - Mussoorie + Chopta + Auli + Rudraprayag + Rishikesh 8N/9D - keeps the Tungnath / Chandrashila trek base and the Auli leg but trims Haridwar and Kanatal. Pilgrims should look at the helicopter Char Dham instead.

Important notes

  • All vehicles in the hills are non-AC. AC does not work in the hilly / ghat region. Mountain hotel services cannot be compared to plain areas - we use the best available at each stop.
  • Vehicles are not allowed at Mall Road in Mussoorie. The vehicle parks where local rules allow; guests walk in from the parking point. Plan light luggage for these legs.
  • The Gun Hill ropeway, the Joshimath - Auli chair lift / cable car and porterage on the Tungnath / Chandrashila / Deoria Tal / Gurso Bugyal treks are excluded - paid direct on the day.
  • The Tungnath / Chandrashila trek (Day 7) involves a 3 km climb from the Chopta road head with an optional 1 km push to the summit. Carry walking shoes, a light jacket and water. Not recommended for travellers with heart, knee or breathing conditions.
  • The Day 6 transfer (Kanatal to Chopta, around 160 km) is a long mountain drive - plan an early start.
  • Drink only tap or boiled water; eat only hot, freshly cooked food in the hills. Carry a light jacket, raincoat, walking shoes and personal medication.
  • In case of any hike in hotel rates, the package cost will be amended accordingly. During festivals and long weekends, these prices are not valid - quoted on request.
  • If the group does not arrive or depart together, additional transfer charges apply.
  • Any expense incurred due to weather, road closures, or landslides is not covered. We will re-route where possible but cannot guarantee completion if a road is shut.
