A nine-day Uttarakhand sightseeing tour covering the full sweep of the Garhwal Himalayas: Mussoorie (the Queen of the Hills) for two nights, Joshimath (gateway to Badrinath and Auli) for one night, Auli (alpine meadows, the Joshimath chair lift and the Gurso Bugyal trek) for two nights, Rudraprayag (one of the Panch Prayag at the Alaknanda - Mandakini confluence) for one night, and Rishikesh (the Yoga Capital and the evening Ganga Aarti) for two nights. Mussoorie sits in the Garhwal foothills above Dehradun. Two nights here cover Kempty Falls, Company Garden, Library Chowk, Bhatta Falls, Camel Back Road and the Mall Road - plus the Gun Hill ropeway (own cost) for a panoramic Doon Valley view. Cool air, colonial-era buildings and a walkable hill-station strip.
Joshimath, in Chamoli district at around 1,890 m, is the seat of one of Adi Shankaracharya's four mathas (Jyotirmath) and the winter abode of Lord Badri. It is the road-head gateway to Badrinath and the rope-way / road link to Auli. A short overnight stop on the way up from Mussoorie.
Auli sits at 2,519 - 3,050 m and is one of India's premier skiing destinations, often compared with the best ski resorts in the world. The Joshimath - Auli chair lift / cable car (own cost) gives sweeping views of Nanda Devi, and a short trek to Gurso Bugyal opens panoramic views of Trishul Peak and Dron Parvat.
Rudraprayag is one of the Panch Prayag (the five sacred confluences of the Alaknanda). Here the Mandakini meets the Alaknanda - one of the holiest stops on the Char Dham road yatra, and a peaceful river-bank night between Auli and Rishikesh.
Rishikesh at the Ganga's exit from the Himalayas is dotted with ancient temples, ashrams and meditation centres. The classic stops are Ram Jhula, Lakshman Jhula, the Bharat Mandir, Janki Jhula and Gita Bhawan - and the evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat is the headline experience.
