The overland crossing
Ladakh Road Trip Packages
Ten itineraries that drive into Ladakh rather than fly. They enter from Manali, Chandigarh, Jammu or Srinagar and cross the passes on the way in, which means the landscape changes around you by degrees instead of arriving all at once through an aircraft window. It also means the altitude comes on gradually, which most people handle better than a direct flight into Leh. These are longer trips - seven to twelve nights - with real driving days built in. Three of them run through Kashmir and include Srinagar and Dal Lake.

Is the road trip better than flying into Leh?
It is better for altitude and better for scenery, and worse for time. Driving in gains height over two or three days, which most people tolerate far more comfortably than a direct flight to 3,500 m. You also see the transition from green Himalayan foothills to high desert, which is the part people remember. The cost is days: the shortest overland itinerary is seven nights against three for the shortest fly-in trip.
Which entry route should I take?
Manali is the most dramatic and the last to open each season, since the passes above it hold snow longest. Srinagar is the gentler climb and pairs Ladakh with Kashmir. Chandigarh and Jammu are the practical rail and road railheads for travellers coming from the plains. Several itineraries enter by one route and leave by another, which avoids repeating any road.
When is the best time to visit Ladakh?
The season runs roughly April to October, and the exact window differs by itinerary - each package page states its own validity dates. Flight-based packages open earliest, from the beginning of April. The overland routes over Manali and Srinagar depend on the passes being cleared of snow, so they typically start later and the Manali route is the last to open. July and August bring the warmest weather and the busiest hotels; September gives clear skies and thinner crowds.
How high is Ladakh, and will the altitude be a problem?
Leh sits at roughly 3,500 m and the itineraries cross Khardung La at 18,390 ft and Chang La at 5,486 m. Altitude affects most first-time visitors to some degree. Every one of our itineraries builds in a full rest day on arrival in Leh before any sightseeing, and that day is not optional - skipping it is the single most common cause of a ruined trip. Oxygen cylinders are available through the tour (₹800 to ₹1,000 per day plus ₹200 per mask). Anyone with a heart or lung condition should speak to their doctor before booking.
Do I need a permit for Nubra, Pangong or Hanle?
Yes. Inner Line Permits are required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Hanle and Turtuk. We arrange them as part of the package - you need to carry original photo identification. Foreign nationals of certain countries require a Protected Area Permit that must be applied for well in advance, so tell us your nationality at the time of booking rather than on arrival. A Ladakh Ecological Development Fee is also payable.
Why does the price change with group size?
Because the vehicle is the largest single cost and it is shared. Two people pay for a whole Scorpio or Innova between them; twelve people split a Tempo Traveller. That is why the per-person price falls steadily from 2 pax to 12 pax on every price table. There is one step where it rises slightly - between 6 and 8 people - because that is the point where the group moves up from an Innova to a Tempo Traveller and the larger vehicle resets the per-head cost.
